The NFL Draft 2019 is Coming to Nashville, TN
If you haven’t heard already, the NFL Draft is coming to Nashville. This year, Music City has decided to shake things up a bit, and the city is making a few changes to what football fans expect from the experience. First and foremost, the event is entirely free for all attendees. But, you’ve also got a unique blend of football and music that’s never been done for an NFL Draft before.
About the NFL Draft
For those who have heard of the NFL Draft but aren’t one hundred percent sure what the hoopla is about, let us give you a little insight. The draft is an opportunity for NFL teams to make changes to their rosters. The top talent from college teams is selected to help lead professional teams to victory. College football players can submit themselves into the draft, but they must have at least three years of experience playing at a college level. You are only allowed to submit yourself into the draft once, so these players will want to choose carefully when they do it. Most will be college seniors.
On the day of the draft, all 32 teams get to participate in the seven rounds of player selection. Each of the teams is allowed only one pick during each round. The order of the selection process is in reverse order of the previous season’s finish. For example, since the Patriots won the 2019 Super Bowl, they will be the last of the 32 teams to pick players.
Choosing Nashville for the NFL Draft
Nashville was up against some other major cities competing to host the Draft such as Las Vegas, Cleveland, Denver, and Kansas City. How did Nashville secure the spot? It could have something to do with the unwavering spirit and support from the locals and NFL fans.
In April 2018, the Tennessee Titans decided to host an unveiling for their new uniforms. The event was outside in 40-degree weather. Not to mention it was smack dab in the middle of NFL’s offseason. Could they expect much of a turnout? Absolutely. The CEO of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp., Butch Spyridon, wasn’t even a little surprised by the twenty thousand people in attendance. But, what did surprise him was how many decided to turn up two hours early and subsequently spent just over four hours in the cold. If the unveiling of a uniform could result in such a great turnout, the draft should pull even bigger numbers.
“It’ll be like the Titans’ uniform unveiling on steroids,” Spyridon said. “We’re the perfect location for the draft. The brand, the destination, the convenience of our downtown and location of the stadium, the star power that can help promote it and be part of the entertainment.”
What to Expect at Nashville’s NFL Draft
This year will be the first time the NFL Draft is hosted outside. That’s the only way to do things in Nashville. What makes this city unique is the star power Spyridon previously talked about, and attendees of the draft will get to experience just that. Big names are expected to play throughout. Some names that have been tossed around include Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, and Justin Timberlake. Plus, you have to include all the local honky-tonk bars that line the streets of Broadway and the performances they will be giving.
“At one point, the NFL folks said ‘music never really worked very well with our audience.’ I looked at them and said, ‘You’ve never done it in Nashville,'” Spyridon said.
