The
Mississippi Delta’s earliest storytellers
posed a similar trait that is detected in the
classic writings of southern-based native authors,
such as, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, “Tennessee”
Williams and in the contemporary writings of John
Grisham. It is a sense of place and a devotion
to the traditions of it past. Nowhere in the South
are these traditions more evident then in small
southern Mississippi towns.
Upon
arrival in Holly Springs you will have a sense
that you have been transported back to a more
genteel world where homes were built to reflect
the elegance of the southern lifestyle. Your first
stop is at the historic First Presbyterian Church.
This was the first religious organization to be
formally established in Marshall County. The present
structure, the fourth to be built by this congregation,
was built in 1860. This church is a magnificent
monument to the skill of Mississippi slave craftsmen
as it was built largely by slave labor.
Your
next stop will be at Hill Top Mansion, built in
1858, is owned by an antique dealer who has furnished
this home with the finest collection of period
antiques in the state of Mississippi. Following
your tour of Hill Top you will stop for a delicious
Southern Style Buffet lunch at Annie’s.
If we are lucky, Miss Annie will not be too busy
to sing a few songs for us!
The
remainder of the afternoon will be spent touring
the (4) acre estate of Walter Place Mansion, Cottages
and Gardens. Walter Place built in 1859 with its
distinctive combination of Greek columns and crenellated
medieval towers was a temporary home to the family
of Ulysses S. Grant when the Union forces occupied
the town. A guided tour of this magnificent estate
is included with your tour.
